SESSION I - Introduction & Welcome!
Saturday, February 16/08

Welcome to Spirit of the Drum! Our opening session features fun improvisational warm-up rhythms; rhythm games to introduce the instruments and ourselves; and basic hand drumming techniques. We'll learn a traditional 3-part African ensemble piece, including Djembe parts, bell, shekere, dun-dun and sangban (low drum) parts.

SESSION II - Middle Eastern Beats
Saturday, March 15/08

Spirit of the Drum! Session II begins with review of last month's rhythms. Then we'll tempt you from your chair with exciting rhythms of the Middle East. Learn basic belly-dancing music, including tambourine parts. An improvisational warm-up and closing lets the group energy soar!

SESSION III - Rhumba & More!
Saturday, April 19/08

In Session III, we'll review, practice, and build on what we've learned. More African and Middle Eastern rhythms will be learned (depending on group progress). As always, we'll throw in some fun improvisational drumming and rhythm games to keep the creative juices flowing.

SESSION IV - Latin American Rhythm
Saturday, May 24/08

Spirit of the Drum! completes its exploration of world rhythms with a simple Latin American beat. Add clave (sticks) and bell parts, and we're shakin' it salsa style! Review previous rhythms, end with a celebratory drum-jam.

General:
No previous music experience is required. Hand-outs will be provided. It is highly recommended that you bring a recording device to the workshops so you can practice at home before the next session.

Drums: This course is best suited to large-headed African or similar style hand drums (djembes, ashikos). Other drums can be accommodated. A limited supply of drums will be available for those who don't have one. All supplementary percussion required provided by Diana's Drum, but feel free to bring your own!
