Press Releases
June 2005, Halton Region, Ontario ~ Grant Approved
to Launch "Talking Drums" Therapeutic Drumming Program
in the Halton Region
Diana's Drum is proud to announce that it has teamed up with the
Halton Aphasia Centre and Halton
Hills Speech Centre to create an exciting new program for clients
at both facilities, at their Georgetown and Burlington locations.
Through
a generous grant from the Halton Healthy Community Fund 2005 program,
funding has been made available to develop and implement this new
venture, enhancing not only services to current clients, but creating
a new therapeutic health resource for residents of the Halton Region
into future years.
Working with speech language clinicians and volunteers, Head Facilitator
Zoë Kessler will lead the team to develop a targeted program
of therapeutic drumming using the HealthRHYTHMS®
approach.
The program will include drum-making workshops to create drums
for both sites, followed by a series
of custom-tailored therapeutic drumming sessions called, Talking
Drums.
Aphasia is a communication problem usually acquired after a stroke
or other brain injury. It impairs a person's ability to communicate
and frequently results in heightened levels of frustration, depression,
poor self-esteem, and feelings of isolation. It is anticipated that
the Talking Drums therapeutic drumming program will help
to address these challenges, thereby providing significant health
benefits to its participants and to their caregivers. This new service
will enhance the Halton Aphasia Centre's existing mandate to help
adults with aphasia. The centres also help to offset the reduced
social isolation often experienced by individuals with aphasia,
improving their quality of life.
The Halton Aphasia Centre is in its 21st year of serving the community.
Diana's Drum is proud to collaborate with this team of dedicated
professionals. Together, we will be offering an exciting and innovative
program to both current and future clients.
